America x Cornell Daily Sun

For the second time in my career I’ve been featured in the Cornell Daily Sun! This time around my single “America” off M’other Brain was quoted in a wonderful op-ed entitled “Poetic Justice: Lessons to Be Learned From Hip-Hop.”

In the piece, author Ashley Harrington discusses the ways in which hip-hop has addressed the intersection of race, institutions of power, and poverty in America:

“Got your hoodie on / they wanna stare at ya / they think you fully armed, black in America,” flows rapper, producer and fellow Cornell student, Sammus, in a track titled “America.”  As she points out, criminality has been made synonymous with being black. Just last week, we remembered the death of Trayvon Martin, whose tragic shooting is in no way isolated.
