First Place Beat

Those of you close to me know that I have been super busy over the past week. Between work, two features, two beats, a music video, and a show on Saturday, I’ve been run pretty ragged so I didn’t even get a chance to check where my submission had placed in last week’s Microwave Monday], a weekly beat-flipping contest for the organization Sessions LA. This week the featured judge was none other than Jeff Chang aka DJ Zen, contributor to New York Times, The Village Voice, URB, and Spin + writer of “Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop: A History of the Hip-Hop Generation” + co-founder of DJ Shadow’s label (guy I sampled for my track [Definitely]).  Imagine my surprise when I found out that Mr. Chang gave ME the number one spot! Check out the beat and see what he had to say below (or on the website here).

“I think the brilliance of Sammus’s beat here is in the way it flips the go-go thang into something that has a subtly shifting Caribbean feel on the subtle hi-hat pulse–now reggae, now calypso, now New Orleans. There’s so much going on in the layers of rhythm it’s mind-boggling. I also like the way Sammus flipped the end of the phrase and loaded it up with all these exclamation points–bits of horns, crowd noise, horn snippets, crazy keys. This mesmerizing groove has got the feel of a street carnival and that’s what put it over the top for me.”
